About The Speaker
Khaliah Barnes is Director of the EPIC Student Privacy Project at the Electronic Privacy Information Center.
Ms. Barnes is a student privacy expert whose commentary has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Education Week, The Chicago Tribune, and EDUCAUSE.
Ms. Barnes created the Student Privacy Bill of Rights, an enforceable student privacy and data security framework. Khaliah defends student privacy rights before federal court, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Federal Trade Commission. Khaliah has provided testimony on student privacy and data security before the California State Assembly, Colorado Department of Education, and the Jefferson County School Board in Colorado.
Khaliah is also the EPIC Administrative Law Counsel. As the EPIC Administrative Law Counsel, Khaliah has drafted almost forty agency comments concerning the right to privacy on such matters as information security, air traveler rights, student privacy, consumer rights, automotive privacy, drones and domestic surveillance, and medical privacy.
Khaliah has appeared on NPR, CBS This Morning, CNN, and Fox Business News.
She is a member of the American Bar Association's (ABA) Administrative Law Section and ABA Privacy and Information Security Committee.
